spoilers for the movie (if u havent seen it go watch it mf its pride month) also discussion about religion (kind of), homophobia, black masculinity identity and culture, ect ect

no because how tarell mccraney and barry jenkins used the color blue as a symbolism in this movie is SO FUCKING GOOD i feel like in almost every scene u can see a color being used in a symbolic way

in my interpretation at least, blue here represents both vulnerability, security with one's identity but also masculinity (in the sense how blue is used in society to represent men and masculine gender roles, the expectations that come along), and which meaning of the blue is used is colored (ha get it) by the context of the scenes

at the end we reach the conclusion that masculinity and vulnerability can co-exist without contradicting each other in the final sequence of little in blue moonlight but WE WILL GET TO THAT IN A BIT

in the beginning chase sequence little is getting bullied and chased while he wears a blue backpack -> the blue here represents the vulnerability, and how it paints a target on chiron to get bullied by other kids

even in subtle details like how juan drives a blue car but doesn't wear blue on himself, how teresa wears blue through-out the movie, how there's hints of blue in juan and teresa's home (in that scene where juan has little sitting with his front to the door but back to the blue, but we the audience can see it, smth tells me its supposed to be how juan is trying to put up a front to act as a reliable older figure for little which GUH JUST SHOWS HOW MUCH HE CARES), his house's walls and mother wore blue at the beginning scenes which shows when he was younger he could feel and project vulnerability into his own home at one point

during the little section, after the chase sequence little is shown wearing a red shirt while other kids, including kevin, wear white and blue. white here is sort of used as a neutral color of uncertainty and perhaps innocence, while red is the opposite of blue; it's invulnerability, but also insecurity and femininity (which lines up with how chiron's mother wears red in the scene she yells at him), and it shows how chiron is outcasted with the kids, bc of his quiet nature

during the chiron section, the bully wears red and black, contrasting against chiron's mainly light colored outfits. i thought a long time for what the yellow could stand for, and maybe it's there to represent whenever chiron feels love towards another character (teresa, kevin, in specific scenes with his mother) or that sense of escapism (when he was running to the beach at night), his shirt for 80% of this section is a plaid shirt with yellow blue and white sort of mixed up together and a blank white shirt inside

before and during the betrayal scene, he wears a white shirt with blue lines, no yellow anymore bc it felt like he doesn't need to imagine kevin's love for him only exists in dreams. it's reality now, and it makes things more clear for him and his identity (THEIR SHIRTS EVEN MATCH LIKE THEY COMPLETE EACH OTHER IM GONNA CRY.)

also it might be to distinguish when its masculinity or vulnerability but the shade of blue used during the revenge scene is a more teal blue while the moonlight blue is like a natural real blue without a tint of green (i could yap on abt how green is used but this is getting too much)

now during the black section of the film, yellow is first used to represent anxiety for chiron when he wakes up from the nightmare; that escapism and affection he felt for kevin and his mother now reminds him of what happened years ago. it still haunts him. and it also haunts kevin shown in the scene when he calls chiron to apologize (but at the center the lighting is blue. he calls in vulnerability)

as black travels back to confront his past and familiar ties, his mother now wears light blue which is contrasted against chiron's darker shade of blue shirt in the forgiveness scene (they're on different ends of the spectrum, but they're slowly healing, both on the same page of what they wanna do; heal from the past)

as the movie continues, the yellow in scenes slowly turns to represent familiarity and affection instead of anxiety, but the yellow doesn't look warm or as bright as before; there's still tension, things left unsaid. but at the centre, the focus point of these scenes, there's blue, and it isn't tinted by another color (the car drive scene, how blue light peeks in through the diner scene, when kevin changes into a blue shirt)

and the scene where black fucking says "you're the only man who's ever touched me." good fucking god.

he looks at kevin's shirt. he wants the blue. he wants to share the vulnerability with kevin.

when kevin holds chiron, the lighting is dark, and the yellow now is warmer, it represents familiarity and affection again. a lot of things are still a mystery to them, a lot still left unsaid, but everything feels familiar again in a new way, in a more intimate way.

and that fucking scene where little looks back in the blue moonlight, showing how chiron's vulnerability and masculinity don't have to contradict one another; he reaches security with his child self. he finally heals.

this movie is so, so beautiful.

i know this message isn't exactly asking for advice, but.. one day when i felt so lost and clueless about what i wanted, what i liked, who i wanted to be (aesthetically), i made a new pinterest board. i didn't search for anything in particular, but every time i came across a photo that made me associate so hard i clenched my fists, i added it to the board. it wasn't just outfits or hairstyles too, but rooms and decor and quotes and vibes. and after a few weeks i went in and browsed everything i had saved, and it really helped me figure out what i liked, therefore how i wanted to present myself.

i feel so unified since then, i finally know how to shop for myself and slim down my wardrobe for things that actually speak to my aesthetic. and i feel so much more confident and relaxed bc of it!!

mister b is just kind of an extension of that; all the things i like to present, with a few extra "things that are just fun to draw" added on top 🥰

South of Midnight has just been in my head since it came out I love it! Only thing I personally don't like is the Christianity so woven in but I understand that it's just how it is in the South. I come from the Appalachias with family in the South. I'd know that's how it is but it's not so blatant that I can't just walk by it for the most part and it's got some good critiques on how assholes use that faith to control. But anyways I still recommend this game if you can handle all that! I love it and it's representation of the South it's incredible! I also love Hazel as the main character! She's so pretty and I love how her outfits change in the game signifying her growth. Plus I also love her attitude towards things even if it can be frustrating at points it's understandable bc of her desperation. I also love the demonstration that even healthy relationships between parent and child can have fights and misunderstandings bc of the parent not knowing when to let their child see the hard to explain parts of the world. And I really love how it explores that the "traditional" style of raising kids in the South causes a lot of pain and it's not good and that normalizing that pain warps the people that come after too. Just guh I love the entire game! If you can't play it all I still recommend watching a playthrough/walkthrough! Do look up any warnings before tho I can't capture every possible trigger/squick in a ramble bout how much I love this game hehe

I talk about my family a lot but like...we're just so fun and our lore is hilarious.

A bunch of sisters had mostly girls. Over generations and generations. My brother and cousin are the only boys in like 100 years. But one special time in the early-1980's, before we were born, one aunt finally had a baby boy. It was a big deal...until that kid came out as a trans girl at like 13 years old-- in the wretched 1990's bitch! Back when that shit was even harder than now if you can imagine. After that, we haven't had a boy born since. Our bit about how we suck at making boys got even more funny as this cousin grew up into the most beautiful bad bitch you've ever seen. Her being so gorgeous and great made it both hilarious and a point of pride. My great grandmother used to talk about it to anyone who would listen.

Every [redacted family name] is a girl. Think you had a boy? No you didn't.

Oh and all those goes along with the fact that like 10 years after her coming out, the rest of us who were in the next gen came out as queer all in the span of a few months in 2003. The aunties were confused and frustrated and it was a big issue in my typically open-minded family. It all came down to them wanting grandkids. Mind you, we're all in the age range of 13-17. Nobody is having kids.

There was constant head butting between the generations. Lots of talk of "just a phase," "I want grandkids" "life is gonna be so hard for you" "luh guh, you ain't gay."

But one day my great grandmother stood on her front porch amidst all the bickering that broke out at a family card game and supper. She shouted exactly:

It is my favorite family story. Because it was one of those really good nights where it was hot and balmy and I was just a young teenager hopped up on all the sweets and seafood I'd eaten while the adults were busy playing spades. I was full from so much good food and I'd finally stopped being scared to jump double dutch bc the damn phone wires were lethal weapons. It was just another night with my people. I was there to eat and do the bus stop once it played on the big speaker. I'd been practicing after my mom taught me the dance and was so ready to show off. And it was a school night! Family parties on a school night just hit different

I had no idea I was about to witness one of the biggest moments in my life. This 80 year old Josephine who only knew bible study and bingo, yelling in the most profane manner and standing up for our lil gay asses. She meant it and the aunties all stopped bothering us about it. It was the ultimate Black grandma act of "leedatbabyalone!" The kind of defense only a grandma can give. One where you're practically taunting you're parents becayse you're under her protection. I'm taking about real power lol. We talk about it anytime we bring up our great grandmother. One of the aunts even told the story at her repast. It's one of those tales where if you want to tell it, you better get ever detail right or someone will jump in and correct you, because the best version includes every little detail.

Like the fact that when my 80 year old great grandmother was making her grand stand, she was absolutely spilling out of a mustard yellow 1970's Bob Mackie fringe halter dress, wearing a full beat of fashion fare makeup two shades too light bc it was summer, and had atop her head, a beehive wig she'd DIY dyed with red kool-aid. Of course the lady in that outfit didn't care that we were all gay. She looked like a John Waters character.

She was our girl.

We have the kind of family lore that sounds too weird to be true. But I feel like all families have some form of it. It is so real and I get such a kick out of sharing it with others. I wanted to leave it here just for my own personal record. I love my aunts very much. I love my cousins even more. I love being queer and weird. I love that I'm from such a weird "people be gay" ass city.

Shes Wallter n Mark’s kid, (duh), and is frankly a mix of them both personality wise,, Much to her own,, I guess dismay? Her personality relies very heavy on my wallter and mark headcanons and my interpretation of the divorce lmao.

Her whole, I guess deal, is not wanting to be like her parents. She loves them A lot. But she really doesn’t wanna Be Like Them.

The main wallter n mark hcs that are important to mention is how they deal with being upset, I’ve imagined mark with a quick temper who’s very straight forward but doesn’t dwell on things too much, liking to deal with it immediately.

And wallter is uh, Not that? He stews on things. he won’t say nearly anything directly and is pretty passive aggressive. And just a general, a lot of their issues before the gray stuff was just. Horrendous communication issues. i cld go more into detail but Guh. Later! (i don’t think the gray stuff is the only issue srry the marriage was doomed before that, gray stuff made it worse)

In any case, Oakley really likes to deal with things immediately. She doesn’t wanna fall into the same pitfalls as her parents— that’s kind of her worst fear. she loves them but is terrified of the idea of Becoming like them, I guess?

She’s usually very blunt, in all regards. Her bluntness is a result of a ton of things. Wanting to be direct so she doesn’t have the same communication issues as her parents, but also, She’s really autistic and sheltered? She barely has any idea of how to talk to a person (i’m being dramatic)

She’s so blunt it comes off as rudeness if you don’t know her well, she’ll say something in a fairly polite tone, Like she’d say “Oh, That is an… Interesting.. outfit choice!” and not even notice how terribly backhanded it is. But, on the same coin of she’s actually upset, you’ll know. she won’t sound polite, she gets very Dry.

She is pretty easy to irritate though . (one of her hypocritical dialogues boils down to “Do you have any friends? I don’t think you’d have any, seeing as you act like.. This..”) She likes to deal with things that upset her immediately, unless it’s something she considers “not a big deal.” And then she’ll start stewing. Especially if whatever tiny thing that bothers her is consistent.

She hates doing it, she wants to be better than to stew on things like that. but she’s Very emotional, and emotions have a habit to override the more logical side of her brain.

I’ve imagined that when she was younger she was incredibly shy. to the point where she didn’t wanna go out like ever. She’s also a trans women, and despised being perceived her whole life when she didn’t know that about herself, so she just kinda stayed home. Like all the time. When she transitioned, she slowly started gaining confidence in herself! she used to be pretty insecure as a kid, but she’s, uh, better about it? She has a normal amount of self confidence, i think.

She’s very nervous about getting on the elevator, this is like her first social interaction in her whole life that wasn’t family (/j), but she wants to make friends!! :3

THE FACT THAT THIS ISNT ALL IS SCARY. OH LORD. HEEELEPPPP

There was that situation where i was on a work trip with a few coworkers, and because there was an unrelated congress in the city my company had trouble finding a hotel for us, so they had to park us in an actual luxury hotel. And at the front desk was one really arrogant front desk twink, like, the textbook example of a twink, just very arrogant and working in a hotel front desk. And i was just standing there, in a full techwear goth "i work in IT" outfit, with punk-ish blue pink hair, both feeling and looking extremely out of place, and the front desk twink just lools at me as if he's so close to call security on my ass. And then my coworkers and i were on our way to our rooms, and i was jokingly complaining about the front desk twi k, and then it hit me. Nome of my coworkers are queer. No one of them has even heard the term 'twink' before. One of them was a fairly conservative church goer. Thankfully they just nodded along and spared me the fate of having to explain what a twink is to a straight audience.

guh im so mad that someone bought the skirt before i could. like, what a perfect shapeee it's so flowy and parachute-y. it could be a pair of wings. at this point i mostly wear black (see outfit 2) so i think the colors on the t shirt would add a little something extraaa to my neutral-ness.

BTW this shirt has been in my likes since december priced exactly the same. since then i have moved cities and graduated college. yet the price has remained at $300. when will the seller learn that $300 for a gray t-shirt, the color most susceptible to sweat stains, is just unrealistic? i love walter as much as the next person, but can we bffr?
